Did you know that forty percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump???? Doing a monthly self breast exam can detect a lump so much sooner than a yearly mammogram... Think of how much something can change and grow in a year's time between mammograms...
Ladies (and gentlemen):
A self breast exam should be performed in the shower, in front of a mirror and lying down and it should be done about 7-10 days after the start your period. This way, you know what is normal for your breasts and can find a lump sooner... and it's important to know what not all lumps mean you have cancer.
It's not just the women that find the lumps...1) men can get breast cancer too. 2) sexual partners are sometimes the ones that find the lump first. Make sure you talk to your husband/partner about this possibility.
According to the National Cancer Institute:
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
Over 220,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
When breast cancer is detected early (localized stage), the 5-year survival rate is 98%.
Over 30% of women are diagnosed after breast cancer has spread beyond the localized stage.
I know several women that have battled and beat breast cancer.
By doing self exams, we can keep the survival rates up!
This post isn't meant to scare you in any way.... it's meant to encourage you to do what is right for your body. Perform the self exams, schedule your mammograms and know your body.
Think Pink!
Until Next Time.
