Just call me Martha...

Hey everyone... I've been home since Thursday after getting my wisdom teeth removed. Yes... I'm still home. I was supposed to return back to work today, but my cheeks are still so swollen that I'm lucky to close my mouth (rubbing my lips together is almost impossible.) I had one very impacted tooth. If I remember correctly at the consultation (five months ago??) that one tooth was buried and growing sideways and outward under my back molars. That side of my face still looks like I'm a squirrel stocking up for winter.... It's very attractive. More to come about the whole process later.

Anyway... Since I've been home, I've watched a ton of movies, pinned a ka-trillion more things, and eaten more applesauce than I care to remember.... Oh, and torn down a wall, moved cabinets in my kitchen, designed a new bar in our kitchen, sewn a baby quilt, planned a party, repainted our bedroom, bought a new bedspread, revamped my makeup supply, cooked amazing meals, bought a whole new wardrobe, designed a million baby headbands, built a TV stand, coffee table and two side tables.....AND--- redesigned our backyard to include a fire pit, gazebo and garden..... Okay, Okay, Okay.... so maybe the first three things were the reality, but I really have done all the rest---- in my head, on paper and via Pinterest :)

I'm bored out of my mind!!! Actually.....I don't know what is so different--- I love planning, designing and creating..... so, maybe it's just the fact that I can't eat what I want to?!?! hahahahaha. Well, that, and I can't go for a run or exercise just yet....I'm bored! I'm uncomfortable. I'm hungry for real food!!!   I'm trying not to complain because things could be so much worse, but it's so tempting because I don't hurt in any way really...... but I just can't do things like normal....

Here's one thing that I've accomplished....

I've decided that I want to repaint our bedroom... I know... we've only lived here (less than) two years.... but you learn things through time. I've learned: I really do not like our yellow bedroom. We have so much natural light that there are times one of us goes back to our bedroom because we think we left the ceiling light on... Plus, Cameron picked a very bright/tropical bedspread from many that I narrowed it down to 3 years ago, so when paired with the walls, I feel as though we live in Florida year round... We've enjoyed it for three years.... but I'd really like a change soon.... And--- we hate sleeping under this big comforter... It's usually in a big pile at the end of the bed...but for a while, Cam slept on top of it on his side... so now the bedspread needs dry cleaned and when I called, I was told that the starting price was $35.... I'd really just like to put that money into a newer one to match a new paint color...right? :)

Tell me if I'm crazy to put a color like one of these in our tiny bedroom (with tan carpet and all oak trim/furniture)...

I want to keep some of the green accents in the bedroom for Cam (he loves lime green) so I think #1&#3 show that they pair together well.... I think #4 might be too light for me. I like things a bit more bold.

I'm really loving all white/neutral bedding right now... well, I always have really... Target has some great all white sets with some pattern in them..... So... Give me feedback... What do you think??? Is the blue too much? Will I regret getting rid of my cheery Floridian room??

Until Next Time...

I love Hallmark

I was in Hallmark last week...killing time.
Found these adorable things...
(I used the camera on my phone without a flash, so they aren't good quality. I was trying not to draw attention to the 'crazy lady in aisle 9' taking pictures of merchandise... hello! shoplifter on our hands!)

Sent this to my girlfriends...

Would this not look AWESOME near a guest book!?!? Wish I would have had it : (

All the Disney stuff would have been perfect for our wedding. I love Disney princess movies!
(Belle is my favorite.)
Disney just does something to warm my heart.
The way they words things is just perfect.

Wouldn't the The Wizard of Oz stuff be perfect as housewarming gifts!?
I'll have to remember that for the future...
(Cam and I have a love for TWoO. We were both in the musical our senior years. I guess we're partial.)

Just thought I'd share my adorable findings....

Oh, and here's a funny for ya. Picked this up on clearance on Cato and carried it around.
Tried it on and laughed out loud.
This is why you try things on before you buy them!

Do I not look huge!??!
I thought a cute little leopard cover-up would be great for work...
ummm.... this is not attractive in ANY manner. This got put back on the rack immediately.
SCARY!

Have a good Saturday!
Until Next Time...

You have GOT to be kidding me....

You would think today was Friday the 13th around here....Before I even got to work this morning, I got a text from Cameron telling me that his windshield got cracked from a rock this morning...

Then within 30 minutes of each other, I had two horrible situations with students at school including choking and vomitting (I'll spare you the details!)....

Then my family headed to an area festival for a live concert and carnival food..... well, we knew there were storms, but we kept an eye to the radar and took our chances.... They ended up closing the concert down early due to the weather. We quickly found out that the festival was not set up very well to get a crowd out quickly. They were not letting vehicles exit through one of the other gates so the parking lot bottlenecked. It took us more than 30 minutes to get out.... Good thing there wasn't a TORNADO or anything! That was just ridiculous....

While we were stuck in the line to get out, Cam called  and let me know that he was stranded just off the highway with a flat tire.......stuck in traffic, there wasn't anything I could do, so he called his parents who came and got him. Because of the storms in the area, they didn't mess with changing the tire, but just headed home to safety. They are heading back early in the morning to fix it.

My family finally got out of the parking lots and headed to my house to wait the storm out and while Cam and I were getting all the flashlights gathered and such (just in case), we found that we had water all around our stand-up freezer and furnace in the basement as well as pouring out of the ceiling near the cold air return ducting on the other side of the basement...

Horrible day problem #3----- After pulling the ducting down from the ceiling in several places, checking the furnace pipes/chimney (it stands right next to the freezer) and exhausting all resources, we finally discovered that Cam had left the door open to the freezer and it defrosted itself all over our floor and ruined the food.......

and Horrible day problem #4---- the water pouring out of the ceiling was coming in from our patio floor that butts up against our basement ceiling.....

Horrible day problem #5---- there was too much water on our patio because our 8 year old roof was installed incorrectly, so the water doesn't run into our gutters, but instead runs under our shingles, rots our decking, warps our roof and runs down our siding (and maybe the interior walls)..........
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

I just want to CRY RIGHT NOW! Yes, I'm having a pity party... a big fat stinkin' pity party. I'm so mad! Water is a horrible word around this house... I think this is #8 and #9 of water being in places that it's not supposed to be.... Cameron and I already feel as though we're strapped for money and now THIS! UGH! Just more reminders that I'm not teaching and can barely afford our expenses because of it.....

When it rains, it pours....

Edited to add:
Cam is now calling this our Swiss Cheese House

Outdoors....

When we bought our house, it had professionally installed landscaping--- that was well groomed and maintained--- but was not as flowery and colorful as I want..... so, I invested in a few more flowering plants, and after about half of them died and I bought a few more plants that didn't live.... I still have some that are alive.... If you know me, you know that me and plants don't get along. I kill everything!

Ok... check out this HUGE rose bush in front of our window. I hate that thing. I spent forever trimming it in the spring, and got several bleeding cuts and scrapes from it. It has wild thorns and is a 'you know what!' I really want to rip it out and replace it with a place to sit, but it's not in the cards yet.... so check out how much I cut it back this week!

You couldn't even tell there were two other bushes in the before pic could ya???
Did you go back and check?? If not, do it! There are two bushes hiding to the sides of that rose bush! It was massive and just got huge in about two months....
This is the pile to be hauled off!!!  I dominated that thing!
It is covered in bees and June beetles all the time, and blocks my hose spicket.... and now...
it's tiny! I love it!!!

Anywho... here are my LIVING flowers!

Ok... now it's time to vent.... See our patio table.... yeah, see it? You're not supposed to be able to! I bought that cover and put it on about six weeks ago ( I know--- wrong season. Most people are UNCOVERING tables and that's when I put mine on... I know, I know... weird.) .... well, with the tiny bit of wind we've had, the corners of my chairs tore holes in six spots until they all connected and made this HUGE hole. I'm so mad! Not that it's a huge expense, but it took a long time to find a cover for a 6 person table... you wouldn't think it was that hard, but that's why I just got a cover--- I couldn't find one last season!

Now I need some advice. Refer back to the very top picture:
Last fall, Cam and I painted our shutters a charcoal gray. We have to paint our front doors (long story, but we have to paint them).... I'm thinking about painting the inside door a gray that compliments the shutters.... now, the storm door--- do I make it black again, or do I paint it white??? opinions?? Ideas???

I would REALLY like a black inside door and white storm door....what do ya think?
Too much for our little house?
I know the black would be hot... but it would be SO pretty with a white vinyl decal on it! And we do have hopes of adding a roof to our stoop soon.....
Comment with your ideas and opinions, please!
Thanks!

Water...Water... Everywhere

The word 'water' in this house is starting to be a 'bad word.' Since we moved in a little over a year ago, we have had water:

- leaking from behind the fridge (hole in a tube for the ice maker/water dispenser)
- dripping from the stairwell ceiling, but a contractor couldn't find a single hole or weak spot on the roof
- shooting out of the sides of our toilet from a broken seal....and we have a high-efficiency/powerful toilet, so water SHOT out at a high rate of speed! haha
- leaking out of a broken water line in our front yard..... THAT wasn't expensive at all!

and most recently....
- soaked into our carpet from a hole in a hose for our shower, which also soaked boards and insulation behind our access panel. We have no idea how long it had been leaking, but we guess about a week or two.
Can you see the wet carpet? The darkest area was soaked, and then the damp carpet stretched out about two feet from the wall. Several days of fans, bleach water for the mold, coffee and baking soda to take away the musty smell, and lots of airing out....we are finally back to normal.

I am so sick of the phrase, "Love, there's water _________"

I'm also sick of having to take showers at other places..... which we've had to do for two separate occassions now!

What's ironic is that we have all these water leaks INSIDE the house, but can't get a drop of rain outside!
Cam and I had been out for a gator ride and came home to this.... It had been so long since we had seen it that I had to take a picture! He laughed of course!!! Luckily, the previous owner put in soaker house in the landscaping, so we turn it on several times a week and our flowers/bushes look great!

Disaster Kit

It seems like here in Indiana, there doesn't seem to be "Tornado Season" anymore.... Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.... They come anytime!  When we moved into our home last year, we were put under a tornado warning within the first week. We didn't have anything prepared and barely knew where things were. We grabbed some flashlights, our mortgage information (we had just moved in!), and some personal necessities and headed to our basement. After the storm had passed and we had time to think about everything, we realized we really needed to be more prepared!

We had the plastic container that our new bedding set came in that we put an old sleeping bag and some pillows in to store down there. I had a heavy duty plastic tote that I set aside as our "storm box." Within it I put candles, flashlights and batteries, socks, work gloves, bottled water and non-perishable food. This year, after some devastating storms, I'm increasing and improving what's in our box.

Let this be a reminder that you should do the same.

In the past year, we got a weather alarm that alerts us when we're under watches/warnings. We also put a tool kit and first aid kit in the basement. Within my research of how to prepare for the season, I learned some new things and ideas.

Besides the typical 'disaster kit' items, here are some things that you might want to consider:
* Instead of using candles, buy glow sticks.
* Always put your phone, keys, wallet, glasses, shoes (and socks) and other personal items next to your bed in a box/container that you could grab quickly.
I'm always paranoid, so I've lived this way (minus the socks) for years. Everything is within an arm's reach of my side of the bed!
* Include extra car keys.
I should really do this anyway! We don't have any sets around here!
* If you don't keep cash in your purse/wallet, keep some in your storm box, but keep smaller bills.
I'm guilty of NEVER having cash these days. This is one that I really need to add!
* Keep medicines/toiletries that you use often with the storm items.
I would need contact solution and Cameron would need his heart medication. I actually didn't have ANY toiletries in our box! --- Include feminine hygiene products. Mother nature doesn't care what week of the month it is! haha
* Include a deck of cards or simple games. If the storms last a while or you have to stay at a shelter, you may want something to do.
* Keep a list of important phone numbers available: family, friends, insurance, utility companies, banks, etc.
* Storms usually come when the weather changes from warm to cold, so make sure you have warmer clothing in your 'safe spot.'
* Keep photos of family members/pets for re-identification purposes.
This is so sad to think about, but something you have to face and realize is possible.
* Copy of health insurance cards and important documents (wills, deeds, titles, stocks and bonds, bank accounts, credit cards, insurance, etc.)
* Throw in an old pair of glasses. An old prescription is better than no glasses at all.
I have nightmares that I'm in a situation where I need help/can't find people and I don't have my glasses or contacts. I need to find my older pair of glasses to throw in. I also included a replacement pair of contacts.
* Dust masks in a disaster kit are suggested.
* If budget allows, extra chargers for phones and other necessities would be great to include.
I also read a great idea: If time allows, record your outgoing voicemail message to include your information and safe spot location.
* Include or store in a bag or container that could be easily transported. A backpack is ideal.
* When meeting with our insurance agent, she has suggested taking an inventory (paper & pencil or video) of the most important things in our home. You could include this in your storm kit, or provide your insurance company with it. Our company keeps it in the safe.
* Try to set a time each year to update your storm box. Make sure flashlights still work, food is not expired, etc.
My birthday falls in the middle of April, so this seems like a good time to remind myself to update!

*When adding food to your kit, here some things to consider:
Recommended foods include:
Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, and vegetables.
Canned juice, milk, and soup (if powdered, store extra water).
High-energy foods, such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars, and trail mix.
Comfort foods, such as hard candy, sweetened cereals, candy bars, and cookies.
Instant coffee, tea bags.
Foods for infants, elderly persons, or persons on special diets, if necessary.
Compressed food bars. They store well, are lightweight, taste good, and are nutritious.
Trail mix. Available prepackaged, or assemble your own.
Dried foods. They can be nutritious and satisfying, but contain a lot of salt, which promotes thirst.
Freeze-dried foods. They are tasty and lightweight, but will need water for reconstitution.
Instant meals. Cups of noodles or cups of soup are a good addition, although they need water for reconstitution.
Snack-sized canned goods. Good because they generally have pull-top lids or twist-open keys.
Prepackaged beverages. Those in foil packets and foil-lined boxes are suitable because they are tightly sealed and will keep for a long time.

Food options to avoid:

Commercially dehydrated foods. They can require a great deal of water for reconstitution and extra effort in preparation.
Bottled foods. They are generally too heavy and bulky, and break easily.
Meal-sized canned foods. They are usually bulky and heavy.
Whole grains, beans, pasta. Preparation could be complicated under the circumstances of a disaster.

We don't have children, but here's a page of suggestions if you do. The same page also includes info for seniors and disabled.

I hope we never have to rely on these things, but I don't want to regret not having them ready. I put together a lot of things on Sunday and now I need to do a bit of shopping to get the rest. Let me know if you have any other suggestions!

Home Maintenance

We spent a week painting the largest room in our house--- baseboards, walls, doors and crown molding. WHAT A JOB! Every time I start to paint, I remember how much I hated it the last time!  After a week of painting and touch-up, we tackled the outside of the house--- siding and patio. We're getting used to this home owner thing!

We cleaned all of our siding!

We pressure washed all the siding... and then decided to try it on the blackened patio! Voila! It's like new!

House Photos

First of all-------- I have been trying for two weeks now to make a new post and our internet has been holding me up. First, it wouldn't load the blogger "new post" template and THEN it completed blocked blogger/blogspot. It finally let me sign back in and I can make posts under the "Old Template" option, so it's taking a little bit longer to upload pictures, but at least it works.... but now I'm DAYS behind in my 50 day challenge and have two weeks worth of catching up to do!

We got the keys!

Our Kitchen

Bathroom
(We just had tile continued to the ceiling to finish out the "shower" after
we had an extra high shower head put in. Many have asked why our tub is so tall---
it's a handicap bathtub that can be walked into and it has jets.)

Front Living Room (We aren't sure what to use this for yet)

Bedroom

This is a large family room on the back of the house where we have our TV, couch, and dining room table.

There are two more bedrooms that we use as an office and Cam's theater room. Also, we have a basement, but it's just used as storage for now. Because we can't decide on how to arrange things and haven't finished buying the new stuff for the house, we only have one room painted. Hopefully this summer, I can get more done around here and finally feel "at home."

So far we love it... We have found a few things about the home that we didn't know or realize prior to purchasing it, but we really do love it! We are so happy to have a home...
