Oh, so many scarves!

Scarves. Scarves. Scarves! I'm almost to the 30 mark (many not shown in this picture) and I love them!! I would say that I wear a scarf at least 3 days a week and I love switching up my style with a simple addition (that keeps my neck warm and tension headaches away during the fall/winter). So... when my collection started growing and growing, I wanted to find a way to organize them.... and guess what... I went to Pinterest..... BUT.... (and a HUGE but).... she let me down. (Yes, Pinterest is a girl. Only a female would be as brilliant as Pinterest, right?)

How did she let me down, you ask? This picture proves that they are all organized so neatly.....

but guess what...

when there is a shift in  power weight when removing a scarf.. this happens:

On top of this teeny tiny huge problem, I chose to use vintage hangers that were in our house when we bought it instead of tacky plastic ones, but the wood is just a bit rough and can try to snag my thinner scarves, so I have to be very careful.

For now, I can deal with these problems, but I'm looking for another solution...

I bypassed these options...

Because of the size and quantity of my collection and specific scarves, I found several ways of organizing not practical. I started with a shoe organizer but many were too thick and spilled out the top, making it look tacky and sloppy. Plus, I like being able to see the colors of the scarf when picking my outfit, and you just can't if it's tucked away in a pocket. The curtain rod wouldn't hold enough--- I would need two and three, and that takes a lot of wall space. And... the mess of rings looks like a hassle to get scarves in and out.... too time consuming for me :/  I'm a bit lazy..

Then, I found this:

Seems logical. I have space on the back of a door for this.... and as long as the metal is coated without any snag spots, I think it would keep them looking nice.... Anyone used this method?

How do YOU organize your scarves???

Fun Finds Friday

It's Friday yet again....where has the week gone?!?!  Here are some Fun Finds.....

 Wal-Mart
They've done the work for you! It's cut to size, edges won't fray
and it's just screaming, "Use me for your Pinterest projects!!!"

 Hallmark
I loved this!

Wal-Mart
Do I need these?? No. But could I see a kid loving these. Yes!

Wal-Mart
Hello scarves! So, in case you don't know... I love scarves. I'm up to about 30, but it's an addiction. They dress an outfit up so easily! Wal-Mart is one of my favorite places to get them, so when I saw their new display, I was giddy! (I don't spend much on my scarves... they can get picked so easily!)

Shoe Carnival
Hello adorable! If money grew on trees at my house, my niece would be getting these ridiculously expensive (but absolutely adorable) shoes for Christmas....but I've yet to find the seeds to that magical tree, so I just took a picture instead :)

Any good finds that I should know about???
Until Next Time....

Christmas..... Getting my Lists Ready.

As if ya'll didn't already know I was crazy based on me wanting to put up fall decor in July and August.... here's another one for ya... I'm getting ready for my Christmas shopping. When you're on a tight budget like we are, you gotta start early and buy when you can. And yes, I'm craving Christmas decorations right now... they're making their way to the shelves in stores and I'm just dieing to put my tree up..........

My key to good holiday shopping..... lists! When I think of an idea for someone, I write it down...I keep a notebook with ideas for everyone and as I purchase an item, I mark it down with its cost. That way, when I find something else, I know whether it really fits in the budget or not based on what was already spent for him or her. I usually start in mid-September, but wasn't focused on it yet, so I'm just now getting ready!

Last year, I used a school folder for my holiday organizer, but it was just a bit too big. It got bent in my purse and was a hassle when shopping in places like the mall where I usually just take a hipster purse.... so I'm downsizing this year.

On top of my shopping lists, I make lists of events I have to take food to, what items I'm looking for for my holiday decor, ideas for stocking stuffers, to-do lists, --- and I take Cameron's movie inventory and list of 'wants' to add to the collection. It helps when I find a good day on Black Friday or something.

This pictures are from last year's folder..
I always bring coupons that I have....

I sort with envelopes.
I usually help do the buying for my grandma so I like to keep her money separate from mine, of course.

The folder.
Always include a pen so you can write down a purchase or idea right away.

To make our lists accessible for my parents (my mom starts early too!) I created Amazon wish lists for both of us. When we are on a site where an item can be purchased, all I have to do it hit my "Amazon" button on the toolbar, add to the correct list, change quantity or color and it's done. My mom can then go to the list, know exactly what brand, color, size, etc. and purchase the item. It's so simple. My brother creates a Pinterest board... that might work for you too.

This year I'm torn on what to use to hold my paper lists and 'junk' for the season... the folder was just so big, but it held all of my full size sheets of paper. I was thinking of using my thirty-one fold-n-go organizer, but everything would have to be folded and then it would get bulky and be less convenient... I also bought a mini binder this year that I thought would be perfect, but it's an inch think and wouldn't be easy to take mall shopping either...

I've seen where women use all their scrapbook stuff to convert a composition notebook or file folders to a planner and that just screams 'mess!' to me. I don't want something that is going to fall apart in my purse or spill all its contents in the middle of a Wal-Mart on Black Friday. No thank you. I want to know it's organized and durable.    I'm trying to get it all sorted out, but nevertheless.... my lists have been started for the year!

How do you sort and organize your shopping lists and holiday season??

Until Next Time...

Disaster Kit

It seems like here in Indiana, there doesn't seem to be "Tornado Season" anymore.... Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.... They come anytime!  When we moved into our home last year, we were put under a tornado warning within the first week. We didn't have anything prepared and barely knew where things were. We grabbed some flashlights, our mortgage information (we had just moved in!), and some personal necessities and headed to our basement. After the storm had passed and we had time to think about everything, we realized we really needed to be more prepared!

We had the plastic container that our new bedding set came in that we put an old sleeping bag and some pillows in to store down there. I had a heavy duty plastic tote that I set aside as our "storm box." Within it I put candles, flashlights and batteries, socks, work gloves, bottled water and non-perishable food. This year, after some devastating storms, I'm increasing and improving what's in our box.

Let this be a reminder that you should do the same.

In the past year, we got a weather alarm that alerts us when we're under watches/warnings. We also put a tool kit and first aid kit in the basement. Within my research of how to prepare for the season, I learned some new things and ideas.

Besides the typical 'disaster kit' items, here are some things that you might want to consider:
* Instead of using candles, buy glow sticks.
* Always put your phone, keys, wallet, glasses, shoes (and socks) and other personal items next to your bed in a box/container that you could grab quickly.
I'm always paranoid, so I've lived this way (minus the socks) for years. Everything is within an arm's reach of my side of the bed!
* Include extra car keys.
I should really do this anyway! We don't have any sets around here!
* If you don't keep cash in your purse/wallet, keep some in your storm box, but keep smaller bills.
I'm guilty of NEVER having cash these days. This is one that I really need to add!
* Keep medicines/toiletries that you use often with the storm items.
I would need contact solution and Cameron would need his heart medication. I actually didn't have ANY toiletries in our box! --- Include feminine hygiene products. Mother nature doesn't care what week of the month it is! haha
* Include a deck of cards or simple games. If the storms last a while or you have to stay at a shelter, you may want something to do.
* Keep a list of important phone numbers available: family, friends, insurance, utility companies, banks, etc.
* Storms usually come when the weather changes from warm to cold, so make sure you have warmer clothing in your 'safe spot.'
* Keep photos of family members/pets for re-identification purposes.
This is so sad to think about, but something you have to face and realize is possible.
* Copy of health insurance cards and important documents (wills, deeds, titles, stocks and bonds, bank accounts, credit cards, insurance, etc.)
* Throw in an old pair of glasses. An old prescription is better than no glasses at all.
I have nightmares that I'm in a situation where I need help/can't find people and I don't have my glasses or contacts. I need to find my older pair of glasses to throw in. I also included a replacement pair of contacts.
* Dust masks in a disaster kit are suggested.
* If budget allows, extra chargers for phones and other necessities would be great to include.
I also read a great idea: If time allows, record your outgoing voicemail message to include your information and safe spot location.
* Include or store in a bag or container that could be easily transported. A backpack is ideal.
* When meeting with our insurance agent, she has suggested taking an inventory (paper & pencil or video) of the most important things in our home. You could include this in your storm kit, or provide your insurance company with it. Our company keeps it in the safe.
* Try to set a time each year to update your storm box. Make sure flashlights still work, food is not expired, etc.
My birthday falls in the middle of April, so this seems like a good time to remind myself to update!

*When adding food to your kit, here some things to consider:
Recommended foods include:
Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, and vegetables.
Canned juice, milk, and soup (if powdered, store extra water).
High-energy foods, such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars, and trail mix.
Comfort foods, such as hard candy, sweetened cereals, candy bars, and cookies.
Instant coffee, tea bags.
Foods for infants, elderly persons, or persons on special diets, if necessary.
Compressed food bars. They store well, are lightweight, taste good, and are nutritious.
Trail mix. Available prepackaged, or assemble your own.
Dried foods. They can be nutritious and satisfying, but contain a lot of salt, which promotes thirst.
Freeze-dried foods. They are tasty and lightweight, but will need water for reconstitution.
Instant meals. Cups of noodles or cups of soup are a good addition, although they need water for reconstitution.
Snack-sized canned goods. Good because they generally have pull-top lids or twist-open keys.
Prepackaged beverages. Those in foil packets and foil-lined boxes are suitable because they are tightly sealed and will keep for a long time.

Food options to avoid:

Commercially dehydrated foods. They can require a great deal of water for reconstitution and extra effort in preparation.
Bottled foods. They are generally too heavy and bulky, and break easily.
Meal-sized canned foods. They are usually bulky and heavy.
Whole grains, beans, pasta. Preparation could be complicated under the circumstances of a disaster.

We don't have children, but here's a page of suggestions if you do. The same page also includes info for seniors and disabled.

I hope we never have to rely on these things, but I don't want to regret not having them ready. I put together a lot of things on Sunday and now I need to do a bit of shopping to get the rest. Let me know if you have any other suggestions!
