Thankful heart.

In the month of November, so many Facebookers take to their statuses to document what they are thankful for. (Truth: I started, then slacked off and haven't kept up with it on paper/in type....but I have in my head and heart.)

As I've seen so many "thankful for" statuses and it's such a friendly reminder of what we have in this life.... It (really!!) bothers me to see some that post disrespectful events or items to be thankful for as well as those that post something along the lines of "I don't need to do the 'Thankful For' statuses because I'm thankful for everything-- my friends, my family, my career, blah blah blah." Well duh. We know that.....but how often do we take those things for granted and FORGET about those things??? Most of the time! Yes, of course we know that you are thankful that you have them.... and Yes, my newsfeed is occasionally overwhelming with all of them, but honestly... It's the month of thanksfulness. Thanksgiving. Giving Thanks.  It's a reminder to myself of what I so often take for granted, and how easily some things could be stripped away.

Robert Louis Stevenson once said---
Keep your eyes open to your mercies. The man who forgets to be thankful has fallen asleep in life.

Oh, how true is that! We go through MOST of the year complaining about work, chores, errands, bills, events we must attend, stuff we have to buy, home repairs, obligations, yada yada yada.... so WHY NOT spend ONE MONTH taking a moment each day to really think about what you are thankful for that day?!?!

I encourage you to spend some time this month thinking of what you are really thankful for, outside of just family, friends, health and happiness.

I'll leave you with this:
Be thankful for the bad things in life. For they open your eyes to the good things you weren't paying attention to before.

Until Next Time.

When did Black Friday become Black Thursday??

As the Black Friday ads start popping up here and there, I cannot help but be angry at some of these companies... Kohl's, Macy's and JCPenney are three leading companies that are now opening on Thanksgiving Day.... I just think that's awful.

Thanksgiving is to be a day for reflecting on what we are thankful for... not for elbowing others in the face to save some money on a TV or laptop.... on top of that--- those poor workers that are being taken away from their families on Thanksgiving to help those crazies... I just think this bologna has gotten out of hand. I would respect these large companies tremendously if they stepped in and admitted that were being greedy and will no longer be opening until FRIDAY....  I'm not a big Black Friday shopper.. I already explained it HERE.... and I think these whole idea of BLACK FRIDAY has been blown out of proportion. The media is glamorizing the chaos and now the huge companies are taking advantage of the situation and cashing in on the greed... and sadly, so many greedy shoppers that have lost sight of the true meaning of the holidays won't be the ones to stand up and make a point, boycotting the early sales that take away from the true meaning of being thankful.... It's sad to think what another 5-10 years will do to the holiday.

30 days until Black Friday?!?!?!

Seriously... where has the year gone?!?!? We are T-30 days from one of my favorite days of the year.... No, I'm not a big Black Friday shopper.... but I  guess you could say that I am a Black Friday eater and talker... Let me explain. For 35+ years the women in my family have gotten together on Black Friday to do some shopping...... but really to do a lot of visiting, sitting, and eating. We meet at around 9AM at our first store....shop for a couple of hours.... go to lunch for a couple of hours... shop for a while longer... go to dinner for a couple of hours... finish our shopping and then grab a late night snack somewhere.... We do get some shopping done, but we aren't crazy about the sales or anything... It's more of a girl's day. I love me a good deal, but I'm not waiting in line for it fighting all the crazies. (No offense if you're one of those crazies!)  I'm not one of these people:

and I'm not going to cause a scene:

I actually think the Black Friday bologna is a little extreme and some shoppers should be ashamed of themselves. The holidays aren't about saving money at the cost of injuring or insulting others...  Some need to get their priorities in line....*Stepping down from my soap box.*

I just like to grab some good deals if there's any left when everyone else is heading home to sleep after their craziness when I'm just strolling in after a good night's rest. I love to grab some cheap movies (the husband is a movie buff!) and stuff for around the house, as well as some Christmas gifts for others. I do check the ads as they come out, but if it's all gone when I get there, so what.

I always go prepared with my money in order and lists made, but I'm usually well into my Christmas shopping by the time Black Friday rolls around that I'm not too stressed. OK, let's be honest... I start in August!

Happy BF Countdown!
Until Next Time....

For the love of burlap!

I have this odd, strange obsession with burlap.... I don't have much of it in my home, but I'm always checking it out in the stores/flea markets/craft booths/etc.... The smell reminds of of summers at the fair and riding the giant slide non-stop (when you had to ride down on the burlap sack).... Anyway, I posted last week about this new product at Wal-Mart. You can read about it HERE. I've also seen where they are selling burlap covered canvas for artwork... How stinkin' cool is that!  I don't know why I love it so much but it's just so pretty.... simple and kinda ugly plain...but still pretty. Weird, I know. I can't explain why I like it to much....but I don't think I'm the only one... Here are a ton of pins that I have for burlap:

Now... some of these I wouldn't care for in my own home.... The smell of burlap brings back memories, but that doesn't mean that I want to cuddle with it on my bed or couch.... I would probably switch for a muslin if I were to make curtain or pillowcases for inside...

With that being said, aren't some of those ideas genious!  And when you're done reading, you should check out all these amazing Burlap things at Hobby Lobby....Ok... I'll stop now so you can go check it out........ Here's a suggestion-- if it's not currently on sale, then print off one of their 40% off coupons!!! Isn't Hobby Lobby the best!!! (I have no connection with the store... I just love it and want to share my findings!)

Lovin' Sunday...

First of all... Happy Easter everyone!  I hope today is filled with family, friends, and thoughts of the true meaning of what today is.

I started writing about all the things that I'm loving lately... but it seemed so odd to blog about silly things like music, clothes and food on such an important day.... so... I'll save those things for another Sunday.

For today, I'll just share this... You've probably heard it, but you should listen to it again. I remember our music minister singing this song on Easter Sunday one year and my body was covered in chills....I've loved it ever since. It's such a beautiful song!

Christmas 1&2!

Because my FIL stays in Florida several weeks out of the winter, we do Christmas early with my in-laws. This year we traveled to Cam's aunt's house a little more than two hours away. We had a delicious meal, dirty Santa game and lots of visiting. It was a great day!

We didn't get a picture at Christmas, so I made him pose when we got home :)

A couple of nights later, we went to his parents' house for Christmas with them. I never seem to be IN the pictures because I'm always taking them.... hmmm.. O well.

Christmas Decorations

The Christmas decorations may have gone up very early in my house, but our lives got nearly chaotic immediately following. My grandma became very weak and went into the nursing home for rehab/strength building, I started working an hour from home and Cam started working holiday hours. The nursing home was between me and the school where I'm working until mid-February, so I would stop every day, and then run the errands I needed to do like Christmas shopping.  On average, we were both away for our house for 60+ hours during the work week. I was lucky to get home, get some dinner, unwind and get to bed by 8 or 9pm. I didn't want to do much of anything else..... and sadly, blogging took a back seat.

Here are some of my Christmas decorations around the house...
Let me preface with--- I am not a photographer, nor a decorator...

15 Tips for Holiday Shopping

With just hours left until Black Friday, I thought I'd share a few more Holiday Shopping Tips... These are good tips for any gift giver, whether you're shopping on a budget or not.

1) Never guess on sizes.
Guessing on a clothing size can easily lead to hurt feelings, insults and gifts that never get exchanged. That's not what any giver or receiver wants... so, hire an insider-- the receiver's spouse, parent, sibling, significant other, co-worker...someone who can check a size for you.

2) Look for sales. (Not clearance!)
Shopping a sale is fine... in fact, it's perfect... but there's a difference in shopping a sale and shopping from my favorite part of any store--- clearance. Clearance items usually cannot be returned or exchanged. All sales are final. Don't make this mistake.

3) Make lists.
Making lists helps you insure that you got a gift for everyone, stayed on budget, and had ideas to help if you got stumped in that holiday rush. Start writing down ideas early..

4) Set a budget. Stick to it.
I don't think this needs an explanation, right?

5) Go in on gifts.
Save yourself some money and ask others if they would like to go in on a gift with you. It not only saves you some moo-lah, but opens up a broader range of gifts and someone to bounce ideas around with.

6) Start early.
I cannot stress this enough. Start early. Refer to number 3. Do not wait until Christmas Eve! No one's life needs that. (I saw a cartoon that said, "I could start shopping for Christmas now, but what would I do on Christmas Eve?".... DON'T DO IT!) Not only does starting early relieve stress, but it also allows you to spend a little money at a time, which is great if you're shopping on a budget.

7) Think like the receiver.
Just because you like it doesn't mean they will. The gift is for them...think like them.

8) Keep the receipt.
Designate a spot in your purse, a drawer, your budget book... somewhere to keep all your receipts!

9) Find comparisons.
Don't buy an item at the first place you see it. Look around!

10) Bring coupons.
Stores give coupons for you to use... so use them! Don't be embarrassed. Be proud to save a buck or two! If you don't get any in the mail, print them from the internet.
11) Don't charge it.
Be honest with yourself. If you cannot afford to pay for it now, you cannot afford it. Do not put yourself in debt to give elaborate gifts.

12) Know the exchange policies.
Some stores charge restock fees or only allow exchanges, not refunds.... know the policies. Don't get stuck with store credit to a store that you do not intend to shop at again.

13) Allow shipping time.
Refer back to number 6. Do not wait until the last minute to buy online or from a catalog. The holidays always lead to back orders, slower shipping dates and so on. Allow time.

14) Double check receipts and 'shopping carts.'
Before exiting a store or clicking 'place order,' make sure you've double checked what you're getting. Some sales might not have gone through, you may have forgotten to delete an item from your online cart or one of your items may have fallen back on the conveyer belt to join the mess the person behind you in line put up there without using that divider thingy. Don't get stuck with or without a gift you do or don't need.

15) Designate a 'gift spot.'
From the first gift you buy (which hopefully was purchased in September or October if you did number 6), you should select a spot in your home to house all the gifts you'll be bringing in. You don't want to start wrapping gifts only to find that Great Aunt Sally's sweater is missing. Keep your gifts together and organized.

Date Night

Every couple needs a date night out occassionally, no matter how low the bank account....
One of mine and Cam's favorite things to do is walk around a resort/casino in a town that's not too far away. The walking and looking is free, and we never gamble more than a couple of dollars, if we gamble at all.

This past weekend, we went to a town with a resort/hotel to see their holiday decorations... gorgeous!
We stopped for a pizza dinner first, and only spent $20 with four slices and a breadstick left over.
One place has a forty-foot tree on top of a nine foot platform.
The other has numerous trees, lights, swags, light posts, garlands, etc... it was all beautiful!
Definitely puts ya in the Christmas spirit.

If this didn't put ya in the Christmas mood, then throw on some Michael Buble's Christmas music, light some cinnamon candles, warm up some cocoa and... I don't know what else. These pictures should have done it for ya. If it didn't... well, I just don't know... *haha

Until Next Time...
